Start with the camper as it will travel

Use an actual loaded scale weight when possible. Before that measurement exists, trailer GVWR is a conservative screening ceiling; brochure dry weight can omit water, propane, batteries, dealer options, food, tools, and normal camping gear.

Record tongue weight separately because a conventional camper transfers load to the truck. A percentage estimate is useful for planning, but a measured loaded value is better and must follow the camper and tow-vehicle instructions.

Build the truck's payload budget

Copy the combined occupant-and-cargo capacity from this truck's Tire and Loading Information label. Subtract the driver, passengers, pets, cab and bed cargo, permanent accessories, hitch hardware, and conventional-trailer tongue weight.

This is why payload often becomes the tight margin before the advertised trailer rating. A heavy trim, cap, toolbox, larger tires, or other added equipment can reduce the practical room available for people and tongue load.

Check the separate towing limits

Match the truck to the correct manufacturer tow-rating and GCWR row using the model year, engine, drivetrain, axle ratio, cab, bed or wheelbase, and required factory equipment. Then read the installed receiver label for the applicable trailer and tongue limits.

• Loaded camper weight compared with the exact truck trailer rating.
• Loaded camper weight compared with the installed receiver trailer rating.
• Tongue weight compared with the applicable receiver tongue rating.
• Loaded truck plus loaded camper compared with GCWR, without adding tongue weight twice.
• Actual rear-axle weight compared with rear GAWR and applicable tire limits.

Handle a VIN or rating range without choosing the best number

A VIN decode can narrow the configuration, and an official manufacturer VIN tool may retrieve ratings for supported vehicles. If several official rows still match, treat their minimum and maximum as configuration possibilities—not as the allowable range for this truck.

Run the worksheet only with a rating you can tie to the exact configuration. If the result would pass at the higher candidate but exceed or become tight at the lower one, resolve the axle ratio, equipment, or table row before making the decision.

The driveway-to-scale checklist

Photograph the truck's certification and Tire and Loading labels, the receiver label, and the camper certification label. Save the exact owner manual and model-year towing guide. Load the normal people, fluids, food, tools, batteries, propane, and hitch equipment, then obtain trip-ready axle and total weights using the scale operator's procedure.
