How to find the right model-year towing guide.
Start with the manufacturer archive or owner portal above. A current towing guide cannot establish a rating for an older vehicle, even when the model name looks unchanged.
- Match the model year first.
Use the year printed in the VIN decode and certification label.
- Resolve the complete table row.
Engine, drive type, cab, bed or wheelbase, axle ratio, and required packages can change the applicable rating.
- Keep the table heading and footnotes.
Save the document title, model year, page, matching row, definitions, and equipment conditions with the number.
If the archive does not resolve the exact vehicle, use the manufacturer support path, build or window sticker, dealer record, labels, and owner manual. Do not substitute a model-family maximum.
What a VIN lookup can do
Identity help, not an automatic tow verdict.
NHTSA vPIC can decode fields such as model year, make, model, engine, drive type, body and cab type, and a GVWR class when the manufacturer supplied them. Its published flat decode does not universally provide an exact tow rating, the vehicle’s payload-label value, or rear axle ratio.
Use vPIC to narrow the configuration. When a manufacturer offers an official VIN rating tool, use that source next. Otherwise resolve the missing equipment with the OEM guide, build or window sticker, door labels, dealer record, or owner manual. If the matching official rows remain unresolved, show only their reviewed possibilities or stop.
